WAG locomotives were designated for freights. The first locomotive in this series was WAG 1. The WAG 1 was delivered to the Indian Railways by the 50Hz Group/European Group/50 Cycles Group (consortium) in 1962, a couple of years after the WAM 1, developments leading to which are detailed in the chapter on the WAM series. They were not just a modified version of the WAM 1 but specifically created for freight operations. All that they shared with the WAM 1 was that SNCF design philosophy which would be followed down the line until the WAG 7. All the locomotives were exclusively built in Europe. 112 units were imported in the years between 1963 to 1966. They were in service until 2000 when all were scrapped. Bidhaan (Name of locomotive) is preserved at the National Rail Museum, New Delhi.
