Rupee or Indian Rupee or INR is the national currency of India. 1 Rupee is made up 100 paise or paisa. The official symbol of Indian Rupee since 2010 is ₹. Indian rupee has a rich history. The word "rupee" was derived from the Sanskrit word रूप्यकम् (rūpyakam) or rupaya in book Arthashastra, written by Chanakya. As of 3rd September 2017, the current circulating banknotes are in denominations of ₹5, ₹10, ₹20, ₹50 and ₹100 are of the Mahatma Gandhi Series, while the denominations of ₹50, ₹200, ₹500 and ₹2,000 are of the new Mahatma Gandhi New Series, and the denomination of ₹1 is of the Lion Capital Series.
